At least 15 people have died and 18 others were injured after the famous Gloria funicular in Lisbon derailed and crashed on Wednesday. The accident, which occurred near the Avenida da Liberdade around 18:05, has left Lisbon in mourning.

• Five of the injured are in serious condition, with the remaining 13, including a child, sustaining minor injuries.
• Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Lisbon’s mayor, Carlos Moedas, expressed condolences, as did European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Spain’s Prime Minster Pedro Sánchez.
• Witnesses described the funicular as "out of control, without brakes" before it crashed into a building; Carris, the transport company, has opened an investigation, stating all "maintenance protocols" were followed.
