Members of Parliament are advocating for a premium Social Health Authority (SHA) cover for all teachers under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). This proposal comes as the existing medical insurance for teachers is set to expire, leading to concerns over the transition to the new SHA scheme.

• The proposed premium SHA cover aims to balance expanded access and sustained quality, addressing teacher concerns about the comprehensive benefits of their current plan, which includes coverage for the teacher, spouse, and up to four children.
• Baringo North MP Joseph Sakilap proposed the premium SHA cover during an engagement with the TSC on Thursday, September 4, amid ongoing discussions led by the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education, chaired by Tinderet MP Julius Melly.
• Teachers have raised alarms over potential double taxation, as the SHA mandates a deduction of 2.75 per cent of gross or household income, with a minimum payment of Ksh300 per month, prompting Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok to announce a review of the overlapping payments.
