Somalia is launching an ambitious Ksh.12.9 billion initiative, the Somalia Agri-Food Investment Partnership (SAIP), to transform its food system and combat a severe hunger crisis. This strategy aims to modernize agriculture, boost local production, and position Somalia as a regional food basket, reducing its reliance on $2 billion in annual food imports.
- 4.6 million people are facing Crisis levels of hunger, and 1.8 million children under five suffer from acute malnutrition in Somalia, according to the World Food Programme (WFP).
- Agriculture Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir "Maareeye" unveiled the SAIP at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2025.
- The SAIP will focus on six key value chains: maize, sesame, lime, sorghum, cowpea, and fodder, and aims to attract public and private capital for climate-smart production and agro-processing.
