• The Bill, sponsored by Nominated Senator Catherine Mumma, seeks to introduce stricter regulations on a range of nicotine products, including both traditional tobacco and newer alternatives like nicotine pouches and vapes.
• The associations, including the Bars, Hotels and Liquor Traders Association of Kenya (BAHLITA) and the Retail Traders Association of Kenya (Retrak), argue that the Bill would have severe economic consequences for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and could fuel illicit trade.
• The petitioners claim that "The People’s Voice has not been heard" and that a significant portion of Kenya's cigarette market is already illegal, warning the Bill would exacerbate this issue and eliminate jobs.
