The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), has launched SoLAR Phase II in East Africa, expanding its solar energy initiative to Kenya and Ethiopia to transform agriculture and food systems, particularly for smallholder farmers.

The project aims to promote productive uses of renewable energy (PURE) like solar-powered cold storage and agro-processing, beyond just irrigation.
Kenya's Irrigation Secretary, Eng. Vincent Kabuti, highlighted that only 710,000 acres out of 3.3 million acres with irrigation potential are currently irrigated.
SoLAR II seeks to unlock finance through initiatives like a Solar4Africa fund and build capacity with a focus on women farmers.
