The Kenyan passport has experienced a further decline on the global stage, dropping to 73rd in the latest Henley Passport Index. This marks a five-position fall from its ranking of 68th at the beginning of the year.
- Holders of the Kenyan passport can travel visa-free to only 70 destinations globally, with no access to the European Schengen area.
- This ranking comes despite President William Ruto's commitment to making Kenya a visa-free country to boost its economy, and the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for all visitors at a cost of Ksh4,600 (USD 30).
- In July, Kenya scrapped eTA requirements for most African countries, fulfilling its promise of a borderless continent, with exceptions for Libya and Somalia due to security concerns.
