Chinese electric mobility firm MojaEV Kenya Limited is expanding its presence in Kenya's public transport sector by rolling out electric buses for the matatu industry, aiming to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption and establish local manufacturing.
- MojaEV plans to deploy 30 electric buses to local operators, complementing over 100 NATA EV units already in the taxi and ride-hailing market.
- CEO Wang Ai Ping stated the initiative is part of a strategy to solve public transportation challenges and build local technical and manufacturing capacity.
- The firm plans to begin assembling EVs in Mombasa from January 2026, initially with Semi Knocked Down (SKD) units before transitioning to Complete Knocked Down (CKD) production, with a projected capacity of up to 5,000 units annually and creating between 4,000 and 6,000 jobs.
