Violent clashes erupted in Ikolomani, Kakamega County, during a public participation forum for a proposed Ksh.680 billion gold extraction project, leaving three people dead and 25 police officers injured.

The conflict stemmed from a National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) forum for Shanta Gold Company’s proposed gold extraction project.
Residents vehemently oppose the project, fearing it would displace around 800 families and destroy their livelihoods.
Several journalists were also injured, and the designated venue, Musali Mixed Day and Boarding Senior School, sustained significant damage.
