The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has revamped its competition rules, replacing the 2004 regulations with the new COMESA Competition and Consumer Protection Regulations and Rules, 2025. This move, effective from December 5, 2025, aims to strengthen market oversight and consumer protection across its 21 member states.

• The COMESA Competition Commission has been rebranded as the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission.
• The changes were approved by the COMESA Council of Ministers at its 46th meeting on December 4.
• Registrar Meti Demissie Disasa stated that the 2025 Regulations and Rules will govern all conduct arising on or after December 5, 2025.
