✨ Key Highlights

A new One Health research initiative has been launched in Kenya to address exposure to heavy metals and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly around Kenyan dumpsites. This Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA)-funded project aims to mitigate health risks to humans, animals, and the environment.

  • AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths.
  • The project is a collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), and the University of Nairobi (UoN).
  • Researchers will collect samples from humans, animals, and the environment in major dumpsites in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru Counties over a 5-year period.
  • The initiative seeks to raise awareness and generate data to support effective waste management in all 47 counties of Kenya, working with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
