Govt Begins Major Upgrade of Ageing Power Grid to Curb Disruptions

Once operational, the Kilifi and Malindi substations are expected to improve voltage stability, reduce outages, and strengthen the national grid's overall resilience..
✨ Key Highlights
KETRACO is set to construct a new Kilifi 220/132 kV substation and expand the existing Malindi 220/33 kV substation under the Kenya Transmission Network Improvement Project. This initiative, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Korea Export–Import Bank (EDCF), aims to bolster Kilifi County's power infrastructure.
- The new Kilifi substation will serve as a major hub, enhancing power evacuation and distribution across Kilifi County and surrounding areas.
- The expansion of the Malindi substation will increase capacity and improve supply reliability for both households and commercial users in the rapidly growing coastal town, with additional network expansions in areas like Mariakani, Rabai, and Bomani.
- These improvements are crucial for boosting industrial growth, particularly supporting the Vipingo Free Trade Zone, projected to accommodate 200 industries and create up to 50,000 jobs.
- The projects complement ongoing energy initiatives in Kilifi County, including the Ksh2 billion Last Mile Connectivity Project targeting 20,000 to 21,000 household connections and the recently commissioned Ksh273 million Sabaki Power Substation.
- These upgrades are a cornerstone of Kenya's Vision 2030, ensuring a modern, reliable power supply for the Coast region, supporting industrialisation, tourism, and sustainable economic development.
