A father’s quest for justice after Nakuru schoolgirl's fatal shooting
Senior police officer linked to the schoolgirl's murder remains free...
✨ Key Highlights
For three years, Leonard Ogunyo has sought justice at the Nakuru Law Courts following the fatal shooting of his 19-year-old daughter, Whitney Atieno, by a police officer. Despite the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommending murder charges against Chief Inspector Erick Mukone Wekesa, the case has seen little progress, leaving the family in despair.
- Whitney Atieno, a Form Four student, was shot and killed on June 12, 2022, during a police raid in Nakuru's Lake View Estate, while her friend Ruth Waithera sustained serious gunshot wounds.
- An autopsy confirmed Atieno died from massive bleeding due to a single gunshot wound to the chest, fired from a close range of not more than 50 metres.
- The DPP recommended Wekesa be charged with murder on October 3, 2024, but the case has been repeatedly deferred, with the file recalled for review on January 29, 2025.
