For three years, Leonard Ogunyo has sought justice at the Nakuru Law Courts following the fatal shooting of his 19-year-old daughter, Whitney Atieno, by a police officer. Despite the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommending murder charges against Chief Inspector Erick Mukone Wekesa, the case has seen little progress, leaving the family in despair.

Whitney Atieno, a Form Four student, was shot and killed on June 12, 2022, during a police raid in Nakuru's Lake View Estate, while her friend Ruth Waithera sustained serious gunshot wounds.
An autopsy confirmed Atieno died from massive bleeding due to a single gunshot wound to the chest, fired from a close range of not more than 50 metres.
The DPP recommended Wekesa be charged with murder on October 3, 2024, but the case has been repeatedly deferred, with the file recalled for review on January 29, 2025.
