Govt Gazettes Changes in Electricity Billing

As long as Kenya relies on imported fuel and foreign currency payments, bills may continue to fluctuate, with Kenyans urged to embrace the changes...
✨ Key Highlights
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced significant changes to electricity billing in Kenya, impacting consumers already facing a high cost of living. These adjustments, gazetted on Friday, February 13, largely concern the fuel energy cost charges, foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment, and the Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy.
- The most significant revision is to the foreign exchange adjustment, set at 120.61 cents per kilowatt-hour, or Ksh1.2061 per unit, due to the power sector's reliance on foreign currency for payments and imported fuel.
- The Fuel Energy Cost Charge has been set at Ksh3.10 per kilowatt-hour, covering the cost of running thermal power plants, which are affected by global oil prices.
- A Water Resource Management Authority levy of 1.21 cents per kilowatt-hour (Ksh0.0121 per unit) will support water resource management for hydropower generation.
- A household using 300 units could see an additional cost of nearly Ksh1,300 from forex and fuel charges alone.
