A significant milestone for Kenya was reached with the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 2C of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). This project, presided over by President William Ruto and President Yoweri Museveni, aims to enhance trade and transport across East Africa.
- The railway will create a continuous rail corridor from Mombasa to the Uganda border, spanning 264 km from Naivasha to Kisumu and an additional 107 km to Malaba.
- Key features include freight trains with a 4,000-tonne haulage capacity and passenger trains carrying up to 1,096 passengers.
- The project, managed by Kenya Railways, is expected to reduce freight costs, speed up transit times, and stimulate economic growth, supporting up to 22 million tonnes of freight annually.
