Ten Kenyan counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa, and Wajir, have been identified by the Controller of Budget (CoB) for significant delays in paying suppliers, leading to accumulated pending bills worth Sh156.84 billion as of March 31, 2026.
- More than half of these bills, totaling Sh84 billion, have been outstanding for over three years, with Mombasa County having 98% of its dues in this category.
- The issue stems partly from successive county administrations failing to honor debts inherited from their predecessors.
- The Controller of Budget, Margaret Nyakang'o, warned that these ageing debts pose significant risks for future settlement by county governments.
