Kenya's ambitious Ksh450 billion livestock sector growth plan is under threat from antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a development that could lead to the country being locked out of global meat markets, warns Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.
- The government aims to increase livestock's contribution to GDP from 12% to 20% and nearly double annual meat production to about 990,000 metric tonnes by 2028.
- CS Mutahi Kagwe highlighted that increasingly strict international food safety standards demand proof of responsible veterinary practices and absence of antimicrobial residues.
- To counter this, the government is reinforcing oversight by the Kenya Veterinary Board and Veterinary Medicines Directorate, expanding the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI), and accelerating the Livestock Identification and Traceability System (LITS) and Animal Identification and Traceability System (ANITRAC).
