The Kenyan government is accelerating the rehabilitation and desilting of colonial-era dams in the North Rift region to bolster water security and protect farmers ahead of predicted El Niño rains.

• This initiative aims to enhance water harvesting, reduce flooding, and improve storage for domestic and irrigation use.
• Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced the plans during a visit to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim.
• The program will cover dams in Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kakamega, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Trans Nzoia counties, with rehabilitation targeting increased capacity before expected enhanced rains from October.
