Nationwide Blackout Plunges Kenya Into Darkness - July 2026
A nationwide power outage plunged most parts of Kenya into darkness on Wednesday night, marking the first such blackout of the year. The blackout affected customers in major regions including Nairobi, the Coast, Mt. Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift. A nationwide blackout on the night of Wednesday, July 29, was caused by a technical disturbance on the Kenya Power national grid, with power fully restored by 2:00 am on Thursday, July 30. Kenya Power has also announced a nationwide system interruption affecting its prepaid electricity token vending and bill payment platforms, currently preventing customers from purchasing tokens and paying electricity bills.
