The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is now investigating the death of 19-year-old Erick Otieno, who died after being arrested at Muthaiga Police Station on Sunday, August 2.

• The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) initially launched inquiries before the case was handed over to IPOA.
• Erick Otieno, a boda boda rider from Mathare, Nairobi, was pronounced dead at Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital after his release from police custody.
• His family alleges police assaulted him and refused to let him seek medical attention despite his injuries; a post-mortem revealed he died of internal bleeding.
