Matatu Operators Launch Nationwide Strike Over Rising Fuel Prices - May 2026
Matatu operators nationwide have initiated a strike protesting the surge in fuel prices, significantly disrupting public transport across Kenya. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi revealed the government has spent Sh28.1 billion on fuel subsidies amid the economic pressures. Over 17 people died during protests held against the rising cost of fuel. A 13-year-old child in Nakuru was shot during protests related to the nationwide matatu strike, with the family demanding justice. The families of three young men killed amidst the nationwide matatu strike are demanding the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPO) investigate their deaths, with circumstances surrounding the killings remaining unclear. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has urged the government to further reduce fuel prices, stating the cost of living remains excessively high despite recent adjustments.
