President William Ruto announced a 15.6 billion shillings investment in a housing project in Wajir during his Madaraka Day visit, marking the first time the national celebration was held in the north-eastern region. The Wajir Stadium was filled to capacity, forcing officials to close gates and turn away attendees, while the stadium was also renamed after the late former Wajir West MP Ahmed Khalif. Wajir elders presented President Ruto with 100 camels in a cultural exchange gesture, and Governor Ahmed Abdullahi delivered a speech at the celebrations held against the backdrop of a nationwide matantu strike. President Ruto also issued a public apology on behalf of Kenyans for historical marginalization of the region and announced that national IDs would only be issued to legitimate citizens. CS Aden Duale described the celebrations as 'historic' for the region.
