A Kenyan polytechnic graduate has finally received her diploma after a seven-year wait, thanks to intervention from the Office of the Ombudsman.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has filed a lawsuit against Mombasa County and several state agencies to halt ongoing construction at the historic Treasury Square Gardens.

The High Court has dismissed a bid by a death row convict to cap all jail sentences at 67 years, the national life expectancy.

• The petition was filed by James Mwinga Gathuri, who argued that sentences exceeding life expectancy constitute degrading and inhuman punishment.
• Justice Roselyne Aburili ruled that Gathuri had already benefited from a sentence reduction and could not seek further redress on the same matter.
• Gathuri was initially sentenced to death on June 3, 2014, for killing his two young children.
• His sentence was later reduced to 40 years following a Supreme Court ruling on mandatory death sentences.
