Eight individuals and a health facility have been charged with fraudulently acquiring over Ksh7 million from the Social Health Authority (SHA), as part of a government crackdown on widespread healthcare fraud in Kenya.

• The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) brought charges including conspiracy to commit a felony, fraudulent alteration of records, and forgery.
• The charges stem from two alleged schemes in Kilifi and Vihiga counties, involving a private clinic accused of falsifying medical information between November 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, leading to Ksh2 million in irregular SHA payments.
• An employee in Vihiga County is accused of defrauding SHA of over Ksh5.1 million, with all suspects denying charges and released on a Ksh600,000 bond.
• This follows the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) receiving 1,188 files from SHA and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) concerning alleged fraud.
• Health CS Aden Duale reported that healthcare fraud globally accounts for up to 15 percent of expenditures, with 30 percent of medical payouts in Kenya linked to fraudulent claims.
