The Ministry of Health has issued an urgent health advisory to county governments and the public following a confirmed Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak in Ethiopia, posing a vulnerability to Kenya due to strong ties.
- Nine cases of MVD were reported in Jinka Town, South Ethiopia Region, on November 14.
- Kamene Kimenye, Director General of the Kenya National Public Health Institute (NPHI), highlighted the lack of approved therapy or vaccine for MVD.
- Counties are advised to heighten surveillance, designate isolation facilities, enforce Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols, and train healthcare workers, while the public is urged to avoid contact with bodily fluids, practice frequent handwashing, bury MVD victims safely, and avoid bushmeat.
