The Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) plans to install a high-speed Optic Fiber Cable (OFC) along the Isiolo-Mandera Highway to enhance connectivity in North Eastern Kenya, following the submission of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to NEMA.
- The project involves a 741.75 km backbone network, 62.018 km metro networks, and 194.517 km access networks.
- This infrastructure will provide internet access to 341 government institutions, health facilities, schools, and community centers across Isiolo, Meru, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera Counties.
- NEMA has instructed ICTA to implement mitigation measures for potential environmental, social, transport, and technological impacts like air pollution, waste, and cybersecurity risks, with public comments open for 30 days.
