Unprecedented floods claimed 44 lives and left tens missing in Kenya, disrupting the reopening of schools for a new term with students and teachers forced to engage in clean-up efforts. Over 500 residents in Osodo, Homa Bay County were displaced and seeking refuge in local churches after their homes were submerged when the Miriu River burst its banks. In Taita Taveta, severe floods caused widespread destruction, damaging over 348 houses. A devastating landslide in Kunyak Ward left more than 17 people homeless, destroying farms and livestock. Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome appeared before a Senate Committee to address the devastating effects of recent floods and discuss mitigation strategies.
