Wajir County made history by hosting the 2023 Madaraka Day celebrations, marking the first time a national event of this scale was held in Kenya's northern frontier. President William Ruto officially opened a new state-of-the-art wing at Wajir Teaching and Referral Hospital and announced the immediate opening of the new Wajir University of Science and Technology during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations. The President issued a formal apology to residents of Northern Kenya for the decades of exclusion and marginalization they have experienced under previous administrations, while also pledging to address the persistent shortage of teachers afflicting the region. Enhanced security measures utilizing advanced technology were deployed for the event.
