Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi presented the 2026/27 National Budget totaling KSh 4.8 trillion before Parliament, with a proposed spending plan that includes significant allocations to various sectors. The budget features a record Sh567.3 billion allocation for security, crossing the half-trillion mark, and includes Sh3.9 billion for stipends to village elders as part of broader security measures. Mbadi revealed that only 3.1 million working Kenyans currently contribute to the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax system. The government is seeking loans totaling Sh1.2 trillion to bridge a significant budget deficit. Kenyans are expressing skepticism and concern regarding the recently unveiled budget, particularly in light of the rising cost of living, with mixed reactions across the nation.
