Police in Nairobi blocked families of victims from the June 2024 Gen Z protests from reaching Parliament on Thursday to lay flowers, citing security concerns. The families demanded the arrest and removal of police officers involved in the killings of demonstrators, rejecting mere compensation as insufficient for justice. Activist Boniface Mwangi separately demanded a monument be built outside Parliament to honor victims of the Gen Z protests that occurred during the June 25, 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations. The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja defended extensive Nairobi CBD barricades and road closures on June 25, citing intelligence reports of potential unrest during the anniversary of anti-Finance Bill protests. Chief Justice Martha Koome has separately reprimanded rogue police and the government for their alleged failures that led to the 2024 Gen-Z murders.
