Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has committed to transitioning contract-based doctors to permanent and pensionable positions by the end of the current 2025-26 financial year. This commitment followed strategic talks between KNH CEO Richard Lesiyampe and Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah on Monday, January 12.

The transition will address concerns over unsustainable contract employment and provide pension benefits and better job stability for thousands of staff.
KMPDU welcomed the move, citing improved working conditions and sustained quality healthcare delivery for Kenyans.
The hospital is also fast-tracking the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA) insurance cover for staff, with private insurance planned by July 2026.
