University Lecturers Strike Over Government's Failure to Pay KSh 7.9 Billion Debt - September 2025
Lecturers from Kenyan public universities, under the umbrella of UASU, have staged protests and are on strike, which has entered its second week. The strike has paralyzed academic activities and is causing disruption for students. The lecturers accuse the government of failing to honor collective bargaining agreements and a major point of contention is the non-payment of a KSh 7.9 billion debt owed from the 2017-2021 period. They insist they will not return to work until the government addresses their grievances, despite a warning from the Minister of Education to return to work.
