Fuel protests: Matatu operators suspend nationwide strike for seven days - May 2026
Matatu operators have suspended their nationwide strike for seven days following a meeting with government officials. The strike, which began earlier this week, was a protest against rising fuel prices. At least 12 people tragically lost their lives during protests across Kenya against the rising cost of fuel, with reports indicating at least 12 deaths and 20 injuries. A 22-year-old engineering student was shot dead in Kakamega amidst protests over rising fuel prices. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki praised matatu operators and owners for heeding the government's call to end their strike.
