Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba has confirmed the death of 16 students following a devastating fire at Utumishi Girls' Academy in Gilgil. The fire broke out in a school dormitory early Thursday morning, prompting immediate rescue operations. Parents arrived at the school after reports indicated that over 10 learners may have been killed in the incident. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and DCI Mohamed Amin arrived at the scene to assess the situation, while DCI Eliud Lagat and Education PS Julius Bitok also visited the academy. A parent who received a distress call at 3 am reported that information regarding the cause of the fire remains scarce. Relatives of students are demanding better enforcement of disaster management protocols in boarding schools.
